PERSONAL HISTORY – BEFORE THE INCIDENT
Born in 1964, to George Robert Nedley Blake and Elizabeth Maxwell-Blake, Daphne was raised in wealth. A popular child, though quite serious about her schooling and hobbies, Daphne participated in several extracurricular activities, including gymnastics, swimming, horseback riding, and archery.
In high school, Daphne met Fred Jones and Norville “Shaggy” Roberts. Fred and Daphne dated for a year before mutually deciding that they were better suited as friends.
In 1983 Daphne started studying Journalism and Media Analysis at Smith College in Massachusetts, where she met Velma Dinkley, a Forensic Sciences and Criminal Justice student. They became fast and inseparable friends. They bonded over a mutual love for True Crime stories, as well as a distinct appreciation for the macabre. Eventually, this friendship led to the formation of the first iteration of Mysteries Incorporated. They investigated “crimes” on campus and gained some notoriety.
After graduating in 1987, Daphne took out a sizable loan from her parents to form the final version of Mysteries Incorporated, which, in addition to Velma, included her former boyfriend Fred Jones and his best friend Shaggy. Over the next five years, Mysteries Inc. traveled the country solving mysteries and gaining notoriety.
In 1989, Velma, Daphne, Fred, and Shaggy agreed to sell their likenesses to Hana Barbara, who made a children’s cartoon based on their adventures. While the cartoon was an exaggerated and dumbed-down version of what they did, it also amplified their fame, gaining them bigger and more lucrative cases. However, Velma and Daphne agreed that their integrity was the most important tenants of Mysteries Inc. and maintained that they only take jobs that they genuinely believed in and could offer real assistance
Mysteries Inc. was active from 1987 to 1992, when they encountered a case that ended in a horrific incident. While the details of the incident are not spoken of, it is known that all members of Mysteries Inc. were deeply traumatized and they went their separate ways.
PERSONAL HISTORY – AFTER THE INCIDENT
Following the incident in 1992 that dissolved Mysteries Inc. Daphne returned home to her family in New York where she spent three years “recovering” with the help of personal nurses and psychiatrists. In 1996 she returned to school to study criminology and forensic science and was then briefly recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency. Her time with the CIA was brief though, due to an undisclosed discharge. Daphne then attended Yale University and again studied journalism, with an emphasis on documentary filmmaking. Following her time at Yale, she found it difficult to get a foothold in journalism, so Daphne took matters into her own hands. Hiring a professional camera man to follow her, she toured various war-torn regions of the world, reporting from Burma, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Rwanda to name a few. She sent these reports to all the major news organizations and was eventually hired by NBC Nightly News as a fact checker and researcher. Within a year she was on television and in 2000 she was hired on an embedded reporter for MSNBC.
In 2003 Daphne began producing her own specials for MSNBC, investigating prisons, religious cults, sex trafficking and various other seedy and taboo subjects.
In 2005 Daphne became pregnant with her daughter, Eugenia. The identity of the father is unknown.
Famously in 2007, Daphne Blake was captured in the North Korea demilitarized zone and held for over four months. Her release was facilitated by a meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il and former American president Bill Clinton.
Currently, Daphne lives in New York, though she is rarely home. With the exception of Eugenia, she maintains very few ongoing personal relationships. She has no contact with any members of Mysteries Inc.
